When I lived in Argentina, we used to see pigeons like these all the time in Buenos Aires. I always found them to be filthy. So when I went to see London Bridge in Arizona, I was confirmed in the sentiment. Here they were hangingout on one of the pillars and it was all birds and they were isolated in thier filth. Thanks for that. They liked the separated spot (it was surrounded with water) to sleep in the shade. I like then over there.

These other guys, they would not leave us be.

I think this was a cool looking cactus. My Dad planted a blue Agave in his front yard thinking it would be this little thing. It turned out to be much bigger then he imagined. I love it (this is not it) but my Mom is not happy. I need to shoot that one, but I shot this one the other day.

I was past Banning and had forgotten to make the turn to head to Hemet. I was on autopilot and listening to a book on my iPhone. When I realized I was about 15 miles past, I thought, why not take the scenic route? I have not cut through Idyllwild since I was a boy scout up at Camp Taquitz. As I am coming around a bend towords Lake Fulmer, I notice a photographer walking out with a big lens. I stop and ask what he was shooting. He says there is the hawk sitting on the bridge in and that it is just sitting there.

I jump out.

I shot way to many, but I just kept firing until he left. He let me get with about 6 feet before he jumped down into the reeds. He was curious about me and would just stare at me.

Here are a bunch more. I am so glad I spent for the Image Stabilization. It really helped keep these sharp.

As I am heading from Redlands to Riverside, I will sometimes cut through the San Timeteo Canyon and then out to the 60, from there I can take the 215 to home or even cut down Alessandro to Arlington. All of that to avoid the 60/215/91 interchange. They have been working on that for years and it is close to finished. Which means it will be only the normal amount of congestion, and not the added headache of the construction.

As I was shooting through, I caught these graffitii that were there and could not resist to shot them.

The Joshua tree or Yucca palm or Tree yucca or Palm tree yucca[1][2][3] (Yucca brevifolia) is a monocotyledonous tree native to southwestern North America, in the states of California, Arizona, Utah and Nevada. Confined mostly to the Mojave Desert between 400-1,800 m (2,000-6,000 feet), they thrive in the open grasslands of Queen Valley and Lost Horse Valley in Joshua Tree National Park. There are two subspecies,[4] including Yucca brevifolia ssp.jaegeriana Jaeger Joshua tree or Jaeger's Joshua tree[5] or Pygmae Yucca.[6] Other subspecies have been proposed but rejected by botanists, including one reduced to a form, Yucca brevifolia fa. herbertii Webber´s Yucca or Herbert Joshua

The Cahuilla Native Americans who have lived in the southwestern United States for generations still identify with this plant as a valuable resource and call it “hunuvat chiy’a” or “humwichawa”. Their ancestors used the leaves of Y. brevifolia to weave sandals and baskets in addition to harvesting the seeds and flower buds for nutritious meals.

The name Joshua tree was given by a group of Mormon settlers who crossed the Mojave Desert in the mid-19th century. The tree's unique shape reminded them of a Biblical story in which Joshua reaches his hands up to the sky in prayer. Ranchers and miners who were contemporary with the LDS immigrants also took advantage of the Y. brevifolia using the trunks and branches as fencing and for fuel for ore-processing steam engines. Its is also called Izote de desierto.[9]

So I am driving, you know I do a lot of that. And for some reason I am on the 60 heading east. I don't normally use that part of the 60, but i was. And all my life I can remember going to the Jurupa Culteral Center and I never noticed this Metal Dinosaur. I think it was the clouds behind. I loved the idea of the shot, but the out come did not look like I had wanted. The clouds had a smoggy tinge and the dirty look to them was not something I can remove in photoshop. I am love the idea of photoshop, but I tend to live in Aperature and shoot to stay there. Masking and such is just too much. I want to play with it, I just don't want to play with it. I know that makes no sense, but if I was speaking the tone of that would have come through loud and clear. Here are a few out takes.

Eliza decided to do a photo project as well this year for the PTA art contest. She captured this praying mantis and then we set it up for a shot. We put some leaves in a bucket and then the mantis on those leaves. We set up one of the modeling lights from my studio set and then we played with the color gels. In the end she went with the more natural one. It is a good thing that the lens I picked up a few months ago has a vibration compensation since it was an extream close up and Eliza does not have the steadiest hand. I think that they came out pretty cool.

I really like the work that guys like Troy Pavia has done with colored gels and hand held flashes and flashlights. He uses full moons and long exposures to get some of these cool images. This is my first attempt. I tried under the trampoline and the second story of our house. My oldest daughter stayed up to do this with me so that we could try it out for her school art project. She got the fun job of firing the flash about 60 times to paint the area under the trampoline and in my bedroom and bathroom.

I went to see the Doctors that I call on in Yucca Valley. There are only two, and they were in a meeting. It is pretty remote, so I tooled around waiting for them to finish so I could see them. Yucca Valley is right by Joshua Tree National Park. As I was driving up to see the park, I was surprised by the house that I saw, they were really cool houses. Here are a few. I wonder if you can rent them, it would be fun to stay there and then be close to explore the park early and late....

As I went to Needles the other day, I was running late, so I came back by Vidal when the sun was setting. Here are the pics I took as I revisited the abandoned service station in Vidal California.

This Picture is an chair that was out front. I did not pack a flash, so I turned the car headlights on to illuminate the chair instead of silouet it agains the setting sunlit sky. I think it came out pretty cool.

Living in Riverside, you can't miss the cross that is on top of Mount Rubidoux. I have hiked the road up to there countless times. When I am training, I will ride from my house to Mount Rubidoux and up to the top and then back home finishing with the climb up to my house from Victoria up to Lake Matthew's.

A Cross has been at the top since 1907 when the first one was installed after Frank Miller had a graded road put in that went to the top. He originally planned to develop the property for expensive homes, but that did not work out. In 1909 the first Easter Sunrise Service was held at the top and it has been held every year since. The Boy Scouts started a path lighting service project for the Sunrise Service in 1922. The cross that is at the top now, was dedicated in 1959 as the Serra Cross. President Taft was here in October 1909 and dedicated a second plaque to Father Serra.

There are other plaques on the mount commemorating the Boy Scouts, Col Shunzo Kido, Frank Miller, and the original dedication plaque that named it Huntington Park.

Now it is a Riverside City Park, Mount Rubidoux Park. Great views of Riverside and the surrounding area can be found at the top. Every year there are fireworks from the top. It is a landmark and if you are out here, worth the walk.

I have a big territory now for work. I sometimes have to drive to Blythe and then on to Needles. It is about 4 hours to Needles from where I live in Riverside. I call on a prison just before you get to Blythe, and there is a dirt road that goes past the prison out into the desert.

I have read that some of the best geode collections sites are out that way. So as I got off the freeway, it was threatening to rain. I thought that I could frame up a cool picture of the clouds in the desert, and I found this campground. I don't know what it is that I find so appealing, but there was a sense of the 50's here. It was empty, it almost felt like one of the abandoned buildings that I can not seem to resist photographing. It felt like I had stepped backward a little bit in time and these are the images that I took there.

Holiness To The Lord, LDS Temple, Redlands, CA

I have been on a bit of a kick with regards to LDS Temples and the images that are made of the Temples. I feel like members of the church who carry a camera can do more with our images of the temples then the standard view. There are some great details that are a part of the temples that the church builds. A lot goes into these buildings and they are really beautiful buildings. I am not saying that I take the best images, I am saying that I want to do more with these great buildings to show their unique beauty and amazing grace.

Above is an image I made of the Redlands California Temple. I will include some past images that I made at the Newport Beach, Oakland and Washington D.C. Temples. I love the pics of the doors on the D.C. temple and the dedication year on the Oakland. But my favorite, is the shots with the Angel Moroni and Holiness from the Newport Beach Temple.

Before my family moved to Riverside, we lived in Buena Park. I remember my Mom taking us to the park outside of Knott's Berry Farm. We would drive to church and right by this every Sunday. Recently when we went there, I took the my girls for a walk to see this before we left. It was closed, so we will have to try again another time. Honestly, I don't remember ever going in there, but that was a long time ago. I was 10 when we moved to Riverside, so there are some fuzzy memories back that far.

Solo Stand Found - Han Solo Makes His First Appearance...

So I guess the name of the blog is hard for some to get. Lost and found was taken, and I had some other ideas that were taken as well. It turns out that it is hard to pick a name that works. Google, Woot, Yahoo and others out there went with the non word type names. I did not come up with anything like that.

So Lost And Found seemed to work, it kind of described how I see myself sometimes. It seems to me that that the more I push the boundaries of what I don't know, it only only opens up more avenues of exploration. More that I don't know. It seems that there is an inverse relationship with the equation, a bit of an expanding circle when it comes to the boundaries of what I know.

Well, I did have a friend that couldn't understand why there were no Han Solo pictures up since it was Solo Stand Found or something. So here's to you Dave! Hope you like the Han Solo Pics! More to come as I have left him in my bag and will pull him out every now and again just to keep it fresh.

OK, I love bikes, I can admit it. But is that so wrong? Really, of all the things to love, Bikes seems like a good thing. The simple but elegant machine that is also art. I really am sad that in the hard drive crash I lost the images of the wicked cool Electra Jeremy 3 that my brother bought off me. I had some cool images of it that I had not gotten around to posting.

I still have an Electra Townie 8 that I bought with the idea of selling it, about a year ago. I found it cheap and thought I could make something off of it, but it is still in my garage. I miss my first Cannondale that I sold to help pay for my current one. I wish I could have kept it, just to hang it on the wall, and maybe to ride on occasion.

I can't just pass by the bike store and pick up a tube, I have to look at all the bikes. It is one of my favorite looks on flickr. I love to look at them, ride them, clean them, tune them, and more and more, shoot them.

I love bikes.

The Triplets. My Mother-In-Law got 5 new grandkids in less then 6 months when first the triplets were born and then our youngest daughter and a nephew was also born. It is great for them since they are all so close in age. I think that my youngest loves the visits just to see all the cousins. I really love the shot of them all together, I think that one came out really cute.

Here are the next batch of siblings. The oldest is missing here since he could not come. I tried for something different here as well. If I can corner the oldest to get him to match,these will make a fun group to put up at their house. Maybe a full group for grandma?....

It is definitely different then what I grew up with. I had 2 cousins and an aunt and uncle. On my dads side it was a little more confusing. I know of some, but we really don't have much contact with them. But marriage into my wife's family, that is a big extended family. It is fun for my daughters and good to be a part of such a big thing.

Jerre Haskew, Former President Of Guild

I got this from Jerre Haskew, the former president of Guild , some of the most beautiful sounding guitars in the world. He wanted to clear up a question I had regarding a guitar that Johnny Cash played and is on display in Corona, California at the Fender Guitar Center. It is part of a display of memorabilia from Johnny that is part of the collection of his friend, Bill Miller. When I went to the guild site, I tried to run the serial numbers on the guitar to see how long Johnny had been playing guild. He said in his note to Bill when he gave the guitar to him that he had been playing that guitar for 10 years. Jerre Haskew as you will read, gave him the guitar.

Thanks for the note Jerre, I have contacted the Fender Guitar Center, but have not gotten a reply as to how to get to Bill Miller. I also think that I have found Bill on the web and have sent him a message as well.

Stumbled across your great website and saw these pictures of one of Johnny Cash's two identical Guild D60R cherry sunburst top guitars. My name is Jerre Haskew, and I was President & CEO of Guild from 1986-1991. I personally delivered these two guitars to John at the House of Cash in Hendersonville, TN in the fall of 1987. There were two of these- identical- that I gave to him in exchange for his endorsement of Guild, which I got in a talk with him on an airplane to Boston in the late summer of 1987. When I delivered these guitars, I spent most of the day with him, and he was among the nicest, most humble, literate, intelligent and gracious people I have ever met. He LOVED these guitars. They were hand made in the USA at the Guild factory in Westerly, RI under the supervision of Guild master luthier Kim Walker.

You have solved a mystery for me as to what happened to this particular guitar. Where is Bill Miller located- the friend to whom John gave this guitar? FYI the other one just like it was sold at auction at Sotheby's in NY City a few months after John's passing. I am attaching a few pics for you to use if you like. These pictures are owned by me.

I can CONFIRM that John was a VERY loyal endorser and exclusive player of Guild from 1987- 1993/1994. You can also see him playing this guitar on www.youtube.com type highwaymen in the search box and scroll down. This was the supergroup of John, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings & Kris Kristofferson.

So I posted a mea culpa a bit back and I have been catching up on the editing that needed to be done for all the pics that are in limbo. It is amazing what can snowball and turn what was fun into a giant todo list. I lost about 3 months of pics with the hard drive crash, but I have been shooting a bunch and am posting again to flickr. So now I need to get to posting here. I was thinking that I would get everything onto flickr and then count backward to start the numbering again. But, I will just start today and get stuff up. From here on out, no more day number, since the 365 project crashed and burned in the exact sense, but since I did shoot for it, just lost a lot in the crash, I did complete it. Now I am just going to blog what I shoot, and try to post every day. I thank you all who have checked in, sent emails and commented. Good luck to the photography club in Washington, I wish I could join, if you all want to move south....

Mea Culpa

Here is the Mea Culpa no photographer ever wants to write, I did not do a good job with backups.

You know, keeping your only version of so many shots safe and protected with intelligent use of backup tools that are so easy to use. I lost about 3 or 4 months of pictures and that will mean that all that stuff that I was putting off and only had to post will not ever be posted.

My iMac went down and I had not used Time Machine for about 3 or 4 months. I will say, that the auto back-up is easy, but it was chewing through the external hard drive space that I used to keep the iMac unloaded. Then I got busy and had not backed up and the bad luck hit.

Apple was great, they thought that it could have been a power spike (not covered by the 3 year warranty) but stood behind the extended warranty anyway. They put in a new logic board, power supply and hard drive anyway. I don't know that it was a power spike since I have everything on surge protectors and nothing else on the that strip went down.

This gets interesting, I had thought that I might do better getting stuff done if I bought a MacBook Pro and got my workflow out of the office and mobil. I bought a MacBook Pro and am putting the iMac up for sale. Now here is the lucky part, I had already bought the MacBook Pro and had the really important photo shoots on and external hard drive so I could work on them with the new MacBook Pro. I was behind on the 2 weddings I shot and the family portraits that I did for some friends. I thought that if I had them mobil I would get more done.

So, think about your pictures, what would happen if you lost your hard drive? I had all the old stuff archived on external hard drives, but lost the new stuff. Down side is I won't be able to load all those images that I shot for me, upside, I am not that behind anymore.... LOL!

My kids and I went to the local chili cook off. (Arlington Chili Cook off and Car Show) and they had live bands and some cool cars and motorcycles. They had some live bands and we went with our friends all on our Electras. As we are cruising through, I noticed that this guy was playing a guitar that seemed to be autographed. Sorry, I didn't catch what the name of the band was. They were playing covers and were pretty good.

When I got home and was looking at the pics, I figured out that this was signed by Kerry King of Slayer. If I had a guitar signed by a guitar legend, it would be hanging on my wall, not out doing gigs. Speaking of guitars hanging on walls, I really need to pull mine down and learn a song. I just never seem to have time for it, let alone to play with the pics that I want to post.

200 Days in and I find it interesting that number 200 is an abandoned house. I find abandoned buildings really interesting. This was a place that someone lived and worked at. They probably had friends over maybe kids, and it must have been a peaceful place. It was fully surrounded by orange groves. Now they are mostly pulled out. There was even a little cement pond at the side. Across the street is a new building with medical offices. This is was probably slated for new construction as well, but with the economy dumping like it has, It will probably just sit like this for awhile.

I have been addicted to Lost American and Google Earth lately. Check out his photostream on flickr, it is some cool stuff.

I drive by this as I head to Needles from Blythe. I go by here once a month for my job. It is some serious windshield time, but with a camera and a book ripped and on the iPhone, I am good. I don't really mind the drive time. But it does leave me a little whipped the next day. I can tell you that I will probably shoot here again.

Vidal, California a small unincorporated community located in southeastern California, in San Bernardino County on U.S. Route 95, 38 miles (61 km) north of Blythe, California and 55 miles (89 km) south of Needles. I received an email the other day from a woman in England who was looking for some help. She had seen my post on this blog about the Riverside National Cemetery and wanted to know if I would stop by again and take a picture of a headstone for a family member. I thought that Memorial Day would be the right time to go and take my kids to do this. They were great and they cleaned the headstone, placed the flowers and the flag and held the 2 stop silk defuser to make sure the lighting was even. We had a great day and the girls got see the Memorial Day Service at the cemetery. It was packed and I think it gave us a chance to talk about things that are important but not always at the front of the pack when it comes to talk time. Death, service, the sacred not horror nature of a cemetery, the military and why we do things for others. We got more out of this then the person who wanted the picture. Thanks for asking.

Here are some excerpts from her emails. "I am an American living abroad. I am from Seattle, but moved to Poland four years ago to teach, and then to England almost two years ago. I grew up hearing about Emory Phillips, but no one really knew what had happend to him until I found his military and burial records on ancestry.com. Emory's grandfather was my great-great grandfather, so I guess that makes us cousins. My father was really pleased to find out about him, and I know he will be very touched to have a picture. Thank you so much."

This is from the email after I sent her the picture. "I wanted to let you know that I forwarded the photo to my uncle in Oregon, and he was very touched and pleased. He asked me to pass along his thanks to you for doing that for our family. I will also print it out and send it to my father who I know will be equally chuffed (Brit speak for very, very pleased)

The fact that a stranger would do something like that really touched me. I wish I had a way to thank you other than to say that I hope you know how much your kindess is appreciated. Please let your children know that they were probably the first people to ever decorate his grave like that, as no one knew he was there."

Also the out takes for the day, they were too moving to leave out. The burly biker that had his head bowed with the entire huge crowd during the invocation. He had a tear in his eye when he looked up. That was so powerful for my kids to see. The honor guard was sharp and perfect.

Here are a few from the big day. I loved how this came out. I didn't love so much some of the others. I am doing a little dodge and burn to fix and some other small manipulations. I am such a perfectionist that these things really stress me out. Not in a bad way, I like shooting them, but it is so important for me to get them right. Not for the bride, I want to make them happy, but for me, they have to be really good for me. I want to be able to hand over shots that will look good for a long time.

Well that is why my wife loves me and sometimes can't stand me. I just can't let somethings go. I want them perfect.

Oh yeah, I put up all of the lights and backdrop to shoot these. I love my Costa Rican family, they are really good to me. It is good to be able to do something for them. They are my best friends family, but since we have been best friends since we were like 11, they have always been around. When I was a missionary in Argentina, his mom wrote me more then my parents did.

I think these came out really well. I am really enjoying shooting with the studio lights. Probably more then most of the other shooting that I do.

We love bikes here. Well, I love bikes and my kids are getting it from me. They all have an Electra and they love them. I shot their bikes as well, but they are not ready to post. I want to reshoot them to make them match.

So I have had the studio lights and backdrops up in my garage for awhile now because I wanted to shoot some stuff with them to put up here. Here is the first that I am throwing up, my daughters.

They are really all pretty good to my eye. I had to up the contrast to hide the backdrop flaws, but all in all they came out pretty good. I shot them to put up in order on the wall. I placed number 2 in the middle of the frame just to make it work with the side of the frame shots for 1 and 3. They hang pretty well on the wall.

This is the only shot that I think came out at all. We attended with our good friends a charity dinner and concert with Chicago. It was really a lot of fun. I think that the fun was not anticipated. Chicago was not ever one of my favorite groups. But these guys worked hard to put on a good show and it came through. It was really good.

It was also interesting to try to shoot with the little Olympus that we carry around for snaps. It is great since it is both water and drop resistant. It fits nicely in a pocket and can be brought along for this kind of thing. It is not my Canon DSLR, but it fit and they were anti pics. All in all, a fun night, but I wish I could have brought my big camera...

The guy who played the trombone (I know really rude, he is not 'the guy' and he has a name, but I told you I was not a big Chicago guy) was really fun to watch. He looked like my good friends dad, and then he kept throwing in these pelvic thrusts and all I could see was her dad. It was really hard to watch with that image of her dad.

Last of the Washington DC stuff, I promise, well not double dog dare level promise or anything, but that is it for now. Outside of the National Gallery there are these pyramids that have a reflective coating. It is probably to cut the sun and heat, but the result is that they are highly reflective, almost mirror like, and it seemed something different to try to shoot. I wanted to get the reflection of the reflections but make it look like it belonged. I lined up the trees to be in continuation and shot. I like the results. I really like the shot in the out takes of the of my me as a reflection.

This Hanging Sculpture by Donald Lipski is in the Washington DC Convention Center. This is part of his Five Easy Pieces, 2003. Five Easy Pieces is a collection of giant, geometric shapes made from everyday objects like tennis rackets, kayaks, guitars, bar stools and bicycles — a nod to Lipski’s fond childhood memories with his father who was in the bicycle business. As you approach the suspended sculpture from a distance, the individual objects reveal themselves. You can also find Lipski’s world-renowned sculptures in national and international museums. His work has been written about extensively and celebrates the common object.

These two 16' tall cylinders, with waterjet cut text in Russian, Chinese, Ethiopian, French, Spanish, Latin, Greek, and Iroquois are installed in the Washington DC Convention Center. They were made by artist Jim Sanborn. They have lights inside of them that then cast the characters in light on the surrounding surfaces. I think that they make some great art for a big venue like the Convention Center. The artist, Jim Sanborn has a lot of cool versions of this idea, google him and check out his work, it is great.

I took the original shot and then played with it in Aperture to produce one and two. When I shot this, I thought that it would be conceptual in nature and a shot worth playing with. In Aperture I adjust the Highlights and Shadows and then fully turned up or down the High Tonal Width, Mid Contrast, and or Low Tonal Width. Note that the difference in the tow tweaked versions is simply that one has the high tonal width pushed all the way while the mid contrast is pushed all the way and two has the high tonal and low tonal width both pushed to zero.

I faced down that dilema again, color or black and white? Of course I went pansey and did both. This is the sculpture of Benjamin Franklin in front of the Old Post Office in Washington DC. There is an argument here for both. I caught it at a great time of day since the Post Office was lit up nicely and gave the statue a nice contrast. But the Black and White does the same and forces you to focus a little more.

I rode the Metro almost the whole time I was here. I stayed in a hotel up by the zoo and everyday I came down to the convention center. I also used the Metro to check out the capitol. I have not really ever used mass transit like this, SoCal is all about the cars. This was enjoyable. I couldn't resist trying my hand at getting some pics down here. Unfortunately, a lot of it did not work, but I like these.

I promise, the last shot from my visit to Arlington National. Have you ever witnessed a funeral here with all the ceremony. I came here to get some pictures and see for myself what it was like here. I came upon a funeral for someone who was of some rank in the Air Force. I was so overcome by the respect that I put my camera away. The playing of Taps, the 21 gun salute, the moment of silence. It all was amazing.

As I came out of it when it ended, I walked away a bit and then I shot some pics of the horse drawn carrage and the honor guard as it left. I wanted to take more shots. I think that as I watched the 21 gun salute that it would have made such a dramatic shot. The bugeler playing taps over the flag draped coffin. Instead I bowed my head and said a prayer.

I was so lucky to witness this.

Well, I wanted to do this justice, and I don't know that I did. I think that when I someday return, I will try to be early morning and I will carry some ND filters. I just can't get away from black and white lately, it seems to be the way to play with and fix what I don't like. The truth is that the light is always so harsh in the middle of the day and this gives me more options for the feel of the picture.

This was a profoundly peaceful and touching experience for me to visit here, probably the most personally important part of my visit to the capitol.

Well, I made my first visit to Arlington National Cemetery. I found it to be a profoundly peaceful place. There is something about places like these that cause you to reflect and ponder. I am saddened that our culture has vilified and vandalized the idea of peace that can be found in places like these. The whole slasher movie, death cult, ghost chaser and spooky thing has corrupted what is one of the most fundamentally hope giving ideas. Rest In Peace. Free from daily cares. We are not, they are free, and hopefully they have found some peace.

In my job, I witness daily the pain and suffering that many endure because of mental and emotional illness. It is as relentless as cancer and I would gage more painful due to the sometimes life long struggles. To constantly be nagged by worry and fear and touched by such sadness, it wears so many down to the point of no return. There is no peace in that. Say what you will about the state of medicine and the industries that surround it, I know that we are not nearly where we need to be in discovering the treatments that will help in these horrible diseases. I am proud that some of the products that we make have brought some measure of peace to those who suffer.

It is not only those things that can wear on you, it is all of the things that we add to the burden of ourselves and others. We get so concerned about things that in a long and eternal perspective have little value. We pay a high price for what amounts to a pittance. Moral choices have consequences. The only coin that we have is time. When we waste it on things that do not uplift, we have truly squandered away the only thing of value we had in this life.

When we visit a place like this, we are reminded that we will die. It will come, and we cannot stop it. We miss the point to often when we focus on the loss and not the life. We have then the opportunity to prioritize the life we have and the relationships we have. We can choose to continue on in a path that we are following, or we can make an effort to chose the better, more affirming opportunities that are in front of us.

For some, it seems like there are not any pieces of this life that hold any value. These men and women would disagree. They used a portion of their time on this earth to protect and defend our freedom to pursue our happiness. Their sacrifice cannot be undervalued. Weather you are for the war or against it, now or in the past, the price that has been paid by many must be held sacred. It does not matter you views of politics, religion or the world. The sacrifices made deserve the all the respect that we have.

I had a chance to sneak over to the National Gallery of Art, but just time for one. I went with the East Building. As I was there, I was overcome with some ideas for taking pictures. I want to choose some of the great masterworks, and make them into photos. I don't know which ones yet, but the same paintings as photos with my family and friends in them. It is a little boring, but would be very technically challenging. In fact, the lighting could be daunting.

A few that become instantly obvious artists to start with would be Georgia Okeefe and some of Picaso. But the one that is most daunting and my favorite, Rene Magrite. His surreal stuff could be great if I could figure out how to make it work.

Oh, todays pic is also cool in my humble opinion. The first out take works as well, the oposite directions of the people and all. I went with the first one because I liked how he was looking heaven ward, it seemed to give the picture a nice feeling. I almost went with the one of the man in the art, but I will save that for some of the Magrite works I want to shoot. The art is actually three different peices, Circle I, II, and III by David Smith.

I am off to buy a bowler.

I think that I have gone overboard with the black and white. Lately, I seem to want to do everything in black and white. I think it is the stone and sculpture here that pushed me this way. In fact, when you look at the color version, there are definitely somethings that I like better. The reflection of the blue sky in the window. But the color differences weren't to my liking, so the black and white conversion.

This statue is outside of the National Archive. I had dreamed of some grand vista of the great documents, but apparently I totally forgot about everything I learned in National Treasure, how everything is so behind such thick glass that Aquariums are easier to shoot. Plus, they keep the building so low on light that there is no handheld photography possible. Mix in the 1000 people in line and it was a bit of a disappointment for me. I could hardly get a glance at the grand old documents.

Nicolas Cage made it look so easy to see the documents, to be cool and dig history at the same time. I am giving you one of the for statues out side. At least I gave you something to think about today. Nicolas Cage made history cool.

Day 181, World War II Memorial

When I finished at the Washington Monument, I wanted to try to get a shot that I liked from the World War II Memorial. Last time I was here, I got one shot that I liked, but it was really just an afterthought that the WWII Monument was there. Really only the top of the fountain even comes into play in the shot. The shot is really about the Capitol looking past the Washington Monument. It really didn't do any justice the scale and beauty of the WWII monument. Here it is.

So this time I wanted to go for something that had people interacting with the monument. I wanted to show the scale by showing people. I really like how these came out. One of my favorite shots ever seems to get its strength with that element. It was a shot in the Lincoln Memorial and I went for that people element to show this monument. Here is that older shot that I took in the Lincoln Memorial. I loved how that one came out.

I wanted to try to recreate that on this trip in the better resolution of my current camera, but I ran out of time and had to go.

I am pleased with how these came out. For some reason, I seem to end up in Black and White with the monuments. It seems to bring the image together in a more seamless manner. Color sometimes is too distracting. I just want to show the whole, the play of the light off the rest. Color seems to make you notice it more then effect of the light on the place. That was problematic in this shot since the water is lit up and the color element seems to make it the only element in the image. So, Black and White it is.

Day 180, Washington Monument

So this is as experimental that I get. This is the Washington Monument, in a format that is a little different for me. I was really going for the grainy polarized effect in the black and white. I shot these later, after the sun had gone down but before real night fall. The sky was overcast and when I got to the editing I tried to keep some contrast. I used a wide (16 mm) setting on the lens with the aperture set to f/11 so that it would retain some detail as the view diminished.

When I did the editing I used Aperture 2.0 and the monochrome mixer to play with the effects. I also played with the white balance and the some of the colors to get the right effect. I think the dark mood that I was going for came out. There is a gritty feel that I wanted. It is not because I have a dark feeling there, rather to convey a sense of permanence that is probably less real then anyone wants to admit. It seems that all of our history has revolved around the imminent doom of our country. The Revolution, the War of 1812, The Civil War, World War I, World War II, The Great Depression (both of them), The Civil Rights Movement, Communism and all the other 'isms that are out there. All about to wash out from under us the foundations of liberty. Yet, still, we are free and facing the next threat.

For all of the history of Washington DC, it is not that old of a city. It feels different then all of Southern California, that is not hard to do. We are the home of strip malls and off-ramps on the freeway. My least favorite sign is the one that says _(insert city name)_ City, next _(#)_ Exits. It kills me that our entire definition of cities in SoCal is the number of exits that get off the freeway. Invariably, there will be a Walmart by one of them, and then gas stations and fast food.

DC has more then that, it is filled with history, both current emerging and the normal kind. But it is a city that has its entire history defined by its role as the capitol city of the United States. That is unique to a capitol like Washington DC. Paris, London, Rome, Istanbul and Bombay all have histories that predate their current incarnations. One is not necessarily better then other, but I have of recent started to not enjoy the new culture of SoCal. I long for an attachment to a place that is more then the newest mall or stucco. One thing I am tired of is stucco. I want brick and stone. Not the trim that is fake, but real stone, cut to build the building.

Well, that is not going to change, but at least I can dream. I really am tired of stucco though.

Day 179, Washington Monument

In an attempt to shoot things a little differently this time around, I decided to take up a spot by the Washington monument and wait and shoot pictures of people and how they interacted with the monument. These are three that I took. While I put up one in particular, I actually like them all about the same.

I did just what they do, I shot pictures looking up (see tomorrows post) and touched the stone. I looked at it in a little bit of awe at the scale of it. I have never been around at a time when I could try to go see the inside or climb the stairs. I want to, I just have always been here for work and not for myself. I try to steal sometime to be here and they are open 24 hours. Just not always to go inside.

Maybe next time. Even better would be to come here with the family. Definitely someday.

Day 178, Korean War Memorial

I flew out of Atlanta, and now I am in Washington DC for a conference. I had a few hours to try to walk around the National Mall. When I got here a lot of what I would really like to see was closed. The Smithsonian is not open past 5:30. So that put a damper in my plans. I will be here a few days and try to shoot different things and ways then I have in the past when I have been here.

I did not shoot this memorial or the DC War Memorial when I came here last time. I thought that the picture of the Korean War Memorial as a portrait, as if the solders were really there was kind of cool. It also removed the tourist from the picture.

The DC War Memorial was put up in the 1930s to commemorate the Citizens of DC who fought and died in the Great War. It has twelve columns that are twenty two feet high supporting the dome. It is just tucked away in a little part of the park all to itself. I know that it was some time ago, but this was the first war memorial to be put up in the Potomac park area. It is not recent, so many don't come to think about what has passed like the Vietnam and Korean memorials. It does not have the scale as the WWII memorial, which is still somewhat new. So it does not get the attention that the others do. It is not well known like the Lincoln or Washington Monuments. It has not been a movie like the National Archives were.

So the DC War Memorial sits alone, a quite memory of a generation now passed, of an atrocious and horrible war. I know that I feel, every time I come here, a sense of awe at what other generations have passed through to preserve the union. I have never served in the military, but I have known and do now know some who do. They are a unique set those who take honor and duty to the point of personal sacrifice. How ever your feelings may lie about war, you must stand in admiration of those who, in spite of personal sacrifice, stand and do their duty.

Day 177, Wilafred Jackson, Homeless at Ebenezer Baptist Church - Martin

So I went out after the dinner at the Aquarium here in Atlanta to try to get a good shot at the Ebenezer Baptist Church. This is the church where Martin Luther King was preacher. It is a place that has a strong historical significance for our country and culture. Last time I was here, there was not much to get pics of since it was raining and overcast and the church was closed. This time, it was dark and the church was closed. It is going through a restoration to make it look like it did when MLK was preaching here.

While I was trying to shoot the sign, I met Wilafred Jackson. Wilafred is one of Atlanta's homeless. She was very nice and she asked if I wanted to take her picture? I did, but I was really low on batteries (so no flash) and she was not the kind to stand still (really hard if you have no flash). It was about midnight and I had ridden the 2 miles on my fold up Dahon to come here and shoot. Wilafred has been here collecting cans and she sees a man just out taking pictures. So we chatted for a little bit.

I had a hard time understanding her, she had that heavy southern accent that was somehow made stronger with her health issues. She really was a sweet woman. I emptied my pockets for her, I think I only had about $10 on me. but she was excited about it and rushed off for pie and coffee. Leaving me with my pictures. I would have liked to hear more of her life or of her Atlanta, but she was off.

As she went, I was very cognizant of the differences in our worlds. Living in Riverside and a gated community, I know that this is a part of the world and our society that my daughters have not had any interaction with. I wonder if I do them great harm with how much I enjoy to spoil them. They are sweet and I think that they would struggle with the emotions of this. The hardened heart that we get as we become adults seems to get softened a little with an interaction like this. We are wound up in our lives, trying to make some progress and that seems to insulate us from the humility of these situations. But the sensativity of my kids would not be easyily comforted as the realization of Wilafred and her situation came to them. They would want to save her and bring her home.

I am worried that we are upside down with the big loss of equity in our neighborhood and many others in our area. We have seen a number of houses just become vacant. Bank owned and up for sale, they have dropped the value of the homes in our area. Where I am not happy about the economy, I am somewhat confident that the equity crunch will turn around for us at least through time and monthly payments. If not a turn around, we will be fine through budgeting and working hard to pay down the debt. In fact, if our kids see us buckle up and work to pay off our debts, it might be a good place to start with talking about the way the world works. The out comes for some folks are harsher then for others. The 'whys' and 'hows' are the hard part, the happenings are the observable part.

Like many, I want to feel good when I give some money to folks who need it. It is distant and safe. But what we need is to feel like my kids would, a desire to make it all better. Desire does not build lives, or even sooth the pains that many who are homeless suffer. It can't. What is more, there is probably not much more that we can many times do. So I took her picture, and enjoyed a few moments with her, I hope that it was an ok encounter for her too. And my heart was softened and my focus returned to the important things that we do in this life. We love, we teach, we learn, we hope, we suffer, we live. It is amazing how quick things fall of the list.

The really hard part is going to be explaining to my daughters that choice plays a role here too. Many times the solutions offered for these situations is more programs with more money. I do not know Wilafred's exact details or how she came to be here where she was. But I do know some who choose to live life in a way that homelessness is the only possible result.

I know many who have no choice. The frequency of Mental and Emotional Illness is highest in the bottom sociodemographics of most societies. It is not that if you are poor you will have a greater chance of these disorders, rather that if you have these disorders you have a greater chance of poverty. Downward Drift.

Yet Wilafred was not weeping or wailing. She demanded nothing of me. If fact she was more interested in how I was enjoying Atlanta. I guess that heavy So Cal accent tipped her off that I was not from around there. That and the bike with a tourist camera. But in the end, I went home after the meetings, but Wilafred had pie and coffee, hot coffee. I hope she is well.
