As I went to Needles the other day, I was running late, so I came back by Vidal when the sun was setting. Here are the pics I took as I revisited the abandoned service station in Vidal California.

This Picture is an chair that was out front. I did not pack a flash, so I turned the car headlights on to illuminate the chair instead of silouet it agains the setting sunlit sky. I think it came out pretty cool.

I am from Riverside. Not in the I live there now sense, but I am from Riverside. Although I was born in Long Beach, we moved here when I was in Elementary School, Pedley Elementary. I attended all the way through UC Riverside. My job moved me away for a little bit, but in the end, I settled back down with my family in Riverside.

We love living here. It is not the biggest or smallest place to live on earth. It is filled with friends and family. We live in a great neighborhood and our kids go to a great school. When I was in high school, I attended a mock City Council here at Riverside City Hall. I remember being here and thinking about how they came to choose this style and how did it fit with the City.

I realize that the clock tower is not going to wow the world with its majesty and old world craftsmanship. But at the right time, in the right light, it belongs and is beautiful for here. It fits. It is not the biggest or grandest, and it is not the smallest or worst. It is what was built here, with what we had then. It reflects the kind of place this is, right on for all that right things, and not to much of the things that we don't need.

I plan to shoot a lot more of Riverside over the next few weeks.

The fires in Southern California last month were all the news. They were so destructive and caused so much harm. They also made for some wild sunsets. I drive from Riverside out to the Palm Springs area every other week for my job. Near Cabazon and the new casino, there are these old relics of the car based travel of Southern California. There are two dinosaures that are there to get you to pull off and buy food. They are open for a tour if you want. As I was driving home, the smoke from the fires was showing that this would be different sunset. It looked as if a volcano or something had gone off. So this seemed the perfect time to stop and shoot this. Below is a normal version and I think you will enjoy my friends shot he took at night.

Sunset, Zion's National Park

Here it is, my entry into the blogosphere. I have been learning a lot about photography in the past few years. Well, I have been shooting a lot and I was generally happy with what I shot. Now I am on Flickr and I have become aware of my limitations and strengths. This picture is from Zion National Park in Utah. I went with my best friend just to shoot pictures. We stopped at a camera store in St George because I forgot my polarizer, and there they had all of these used Cokin filters. I have wanted to try them and so I bought 6 of them for $2.50 each along with the holder. I used a Gradual Tobacco T1 Ref. 124 and a Gradual Grey G1 Ref. 120 which I turned to angle a little. I love the results, but I was the little guy here.  

The park had more photographers then wildlife.  When I hiked up the lower narrows, I saw maybe half a dozen birds and three fish.  I counted 29 photographers.  As we were leaving the park, we saw this gathering of photographers on the bridge at Canyon Junction.  So, of course we jumped out to investigate.  I think that this picture is actually better in some ways due to the documentary quality.  There are so many great shots of this park, but on the other side of those exposures lies another world.  In defense of the wildlife, we did see about a dozen deer as we were leaving.  In fact I think that they come out only when everyone is leaving.

Analogously, Authors write about words to convey something deeper, so a photographer shooting photographers should have something on another level there.  Unfortunately for me, it was shallow, I had camera envy.  Look at those uber-cool large format rigs.   One was a Wista, up to $2000 for the camera before lenses and the rest.   Another was a Linhof, $6ooo and up. There were a few more large format cameras there along with some other medium formats.  10 sheets of film for those large formats run about $30.  I thought that I was really pretty good with my Rebel XTi.  But that was something to watch.
